Driving a campervan

Updated 2026-10-06

Know the size before the first junction

Ask for the height and length at handover and write them down. Car-park barriers, drive-throughs, and old railway bridges are the usual surprises.

A campervan is wider than it feels from the driver's seat. Take corners more slowly than you would in a car, and use passing places rather than verges.

Fatigue

Wind and a higher centre of gravity make a long day more tiring. Plan fewer hours on the first day, especially if you are also learning the kitchen and beds.
